The History and Principles of Ayurveda
Ayurveda as a discipline of medicine has been known to be the oldest medical institution in the history of the entire world. Interestingly, it is widely practised even today, not only in India, where it was born, but in so many other nations of the west. The real practitioners of Ayurveda swear by its effectiveness in treating diseases as dreaded as heart ailments and cancers of many kinds. And this is the reason why even today you won’t get disappointed if you go looking for a good sex specialist doctor in India who treats through Ayurveda. In this post, today, we are going to learn a bit about the history of this medical institution and the principles that make it so effective.
A Brief History of Ayurveda
It is believed that about five thousands of years ago the sages of India received the scripture of Ayurveda as a from their Hindu gods. This scripture or sacred text contained precious information about how to lead a balanced and healthy life through physical and mental health.
Brahma, the god of creation (in the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh) in the Hindu dharma is said to have been the creator of Ayurveda. It is believed that after having created the Ayurveda, he then passed on the knowledge to his son Daksha Prajapati, who then passed it to the twin Vedic gods called Ashvins or Ashwini Kumaras.
This knowledge of the fine art of healthy living made the Ashvins the physicians of the gods. Because of this, they came to be known as the Devas (gods) of Ayurveda. The twin Ashvins then presented Indra, the king of gods, with Ayurveda.
The three physician disciples of Indra, namely Acharya Bharadwaj, Acharya Kashyapa and Acharya Dhanvantari, went on to form Ayurveda into a medical theory and practice as we know it today.
Bharadwaj’s sermons and lectures were developed into fundamental Ayurvedic text of internal medicine by his disciple Agnivesha. Then Acharya Charak, Agnivesha’s disciple revised this body of his guru’s work. And so continued the tradition of passing down Ayurveda from gods to sages; from gurus to disciples.
The Hindhu dharma epic Mahabharata also narrates the story of Dhanvantari as being a reincarnation of god Vishnu. Dhanvantari emerged during the Sagar Manthan (the cosmic churning of the sea) and was commissioned by Vishnu for helping humanity cure maladies.
Ayurveda has been such big a phenomenon that the sages of India dedicated the entire length and breadth of the life span to the cause of understanding the truth behind the universe, life and how to sustain a healthy life. The knowledge has seeped through the ages and eons from gurus to their disciples, thus keeping tradition and the practice alive for thousands of years.
Ayurveda as a Concept
The literal translation of the word Ayurveda from Sanskrit is: Ayu, meaning life, and Veda, meaning science or knowledge: the Science of Life. the very science extensively explores natural methods and resources that help improve the wellness of the human body and mind. While it has been helping humans achieve good health for millennia, it doesn’t fail to evolve even as new diseases evolve.
Basic Principles of Ayurveda
The main principle of Ayurveda is that the whole universe, including the human body, is made of 5 elements: Vayu (Air), Jala (Water), Aakash (Ether or Space), Prithvi (Earth), Agni/Teja (Fire). Together they are known as Pancha Mahabhoota. From these 5 elements are formed the three humours of the human body or the Tridosha, namely
- Vata Dosha: It is responsible for controlling electrolyte balance, cellular
transport, and elimination of body wastes. Dryness causes an increase of vata.
2. Pitta Dosha:It is responsible for regulating body temperature, coordinating the
optic nerve and managing hunger and thirst. Heat aggravates pitta in the body.
3. Kapha Dosha: It is responsible for providing lubrication to joints for ensuring
proper joint function. Sweet and fatty food intake increases kapha.
These three doshas (and their 5 sub-doshas each)or humours control the physiological function of the body. While Vata governs the catabolism of the body, Pitta governs the metabolism, and Kapha, the anabolism of the body.
For a body to function in perfect order, these doshas must stay balanced. Should there be any imbalance among these three, the result will be disease or illness. So, Ayurveda believes that for a healthy body, one should maintain the bodily balance of these doshas. And that is possible through following the divine wisdom of the gods.
These Tridosha can also responsible for a person’s temperament and personality type. This is called the concept of Prakruti, which means that each person has a combination of the Tridoshas. When an imbalance in the doshas occurs, the energies of the body change. This state in a person is called Vikruti, which may or may not result in obvious physiological and behavioural symptoms.
Ayurveda, thus, seeks to keep these doshas in balance. By implication, any disease or illness can possibly be treated by treating Vikruti in a person’s dosha. And this is the same principles that ayurvedic sexologists in India base their practice upon. And this is the reason why Ayurvedic medicine tends to show better results than modern medicine.
Ayurveda has existed for eons and is still successful in treating conditions that many a modern medicine can only suppress. If you have been considering Ayurvedic medicine for male problems, going for a sex specialist doctor in India can be helpful. A tendency that you must be warned against is self-medication. Though Ayurveda has known to be a safer therapy that other therapies, it is only foolish to think of self-medication. That’s because a practitioner studies your physical and psychological tendencies before prescribing medication for male sex problems, thus eliminating the risk of sever side effects.
